Missa Brasileira

The Missa Brasileira (Jean Kleeb)

Missa Brasileira   - Jean Kleeb
Latin Mass for mixed choir SATB, soprano solo, cello, percussion and band

The liturgical Mass text of Missa Brasileira is set to typical Brazilian rhythms and styles and builds a bridge between European spiritual choral music and the rhythmic intensity of South America. The blending of harmonies of the Renaissance and Early Baroque with
the melodies and rhythms of Indian and Afro-Brazilian music is audible.
What’s more, popular styles like bossa nova, samba and baião are integrated within sacred choral music.

Performance Notes
Soprano Solo: In the C part of the Kyrie there is a
short jazz improvisation (performance suggestions are
listed). The solo is written out at the repeat.
Choir: The syncopations are always to be sung softly
and without accents. The rhythm flows of its own accord
as the percussion instruments and piano support the
choir.
A chamber choir setting can be used optionally
in the Domine Deus and Sanctus.
Viola da Gamba and Violoncello: Some movements
are intended for the viola da gamba and others for the
cello. However, it is possible to perform everything on
the cello:
➜ Gloria for the cello: if possible, the percussion
should not sound too loud in order for the cello
to be heard.
➜ Laudamus te and Qui tollis peccata mundi
for the viola da gamba and harpsichord (can
also be supplemented by a cello and piano or
harpsichord)
➜ Credo, Osanna and Benedictus for the cello
Piano, Cembalo and Bass: The pianist can play freely in
those movements containing chord symbols in the score
(except at the Credo); a guitar can also accompany here.
The harpsichord is to be used in Laudamus te and Qui
tollis peccata mundi; the piano can take this part in case
there is no harpsichord or viola da gamba at hand. The
bass should be an acoustic bass.
Percussion:
➜ A small group instrumental setting is already possible
with cajón or drum set and shaker.
➜ T he large group scoring has been planned for three
players, whereby each movement has a special
instrumentation: drum set, shaker, tambourine,
agogô (Brasilian bells), triangle, pandeiro (Brasilian
hand frame drum), surdo (Brasilian samba drum)
and a frame drum.
Kyrie: common bossa nova rhythm with drum set
and shaker. The rhythm can be played with cajón
and shaker.
Gloria: congas, tambourine (or pandeiro), surdo (or
low drum) and in the middle movement triangle for
the baião rhythm.
Quoniam tu solus Sanctus: agogô, pandeiro (or tambourine)
and surdo (or low drum).
Cum Sancto Spiritu: agogô, congas, snare drum with
brushes and surdo (or low drum).
Credo in the middle part: shaker, pandeiro (or tambourine)
and surdo (or low drum).
Sanctus: frame drum (or darbuka, goblet drum), cajón
or tambourine optional
Osanna: triangle, congas and surdo (or low drum).
It is important that the percussion sounds light and
lively. The percussion instruments should support the
choir. The instruments are played mainly with brushes
and soft mallets.

Have fun with the music!
